Modulele GBIC tip WDM (Wavelength-Division Multiplexing) transmit multiple semnale multiplexate pe fibra optică, utilizand diferite lungimi de unda. Interfata sa se conecteaza la o placa de baza (a unui switch, router sau un echipament similar) avand modul optic sau electornic pentru cablu UTP. Acest lucru permite o multiplicare a capacităţii de emisie-recepţie, care permite comunicaţii bidirecţionale pe un singur fir de fibra.
Modulele GBIC WDM funcţionează la o rată de transfer fixă de 1.25 Gbs si doar pentru conectori SC simplex.

The SBN-GBIC-WD series single-mode optical transceivers meet the Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) specification Rev. 5.5. It satisfies the optical interface specifications defined in IEEE 802.3ah 1000BASE-BX10 by using 1310nm/1550nm transmitter and 1550nm/1310nm receiver. The transmitter section uses a multiple quantum well laser and is a class 1 laser compliant according to International Safety Standard IEC 60825. The receiver section uses an integrated 1550 nm/1310nm detector preamplifier (IDP) mounted in an optical header and a limiting post-amplifier IC. A PECL input / output logic interface is used. TTL RX-LOS output simplifies interface to external circuitry. A 20-pin SCA-2 host connector is used to connect the converter to the host system.
